How to Prep for Your Spray Tan: The Ultimate Guide

Nothing feels better than stepping out with a flawless, bronzed glow—but the secret to that perfect spray tan starts before you even walk into the spa. Prepping your skin properly will ensure your tan lasts longer, looks more natural, and fades evenly. At Slim’s Sunset Spa, we want you to feel confident and glowing after every session. Here’s your step-by-step guide to prepping for your spray tan.
1. When to Book Your Spray Tan
Timing is everything!
Schedule your tan 1–2 days before your big event. This gives your color time to fully develop and look its best.
Brides & big events: Always book a trial tan at least 3–4 weeks before so you can perfect your glow.
Think about rinse time: Morning, afternoon, or evening—your artist can recommend the best rinse time based on your lifestyle.
2. Exfoliate & Prep Your Skin
Proper exfoliation is the foundation of a flawless tan.
Exfoliate 24 hours before your appointment using a mitt, glove, or dry brush.
Focus on areas like knees, elbows, and ankles where skin is drier.
Avoid oil-based scrubs—oils can block the tanning solution from absorbing evenly.
3. Coordinate Other Beauty Services
Don’t let other appointments undo your tan!
Waxing/Shaving: Do this 24–48 hours before your tan to avoid irritation.
Mani/Pedi: Schedule before your spray tan so scrubbing and soaking don’t remove color.
Facials & Massages: At least 1–2 days before your tan to avoid oils or exfoliants interfering.
Hair Appointments: Always book color or cuts before your tan, never after.
4. Day of Your Appointment
Skip products that can block or react with your tan:
🚫 No lotion, oils, or perfume
🚫 No deodorant or makeup
🚫 No tight clothing or jewelry
Instead, wear loose, dark clothing to avoid smudges and lines.
5. What to Wear While You Marinate
After your spray tan, your skin needs time to set. What you wear matters!
Stick to loose, breathable fabrics like oversized tees and soft joggers.
Avoid bras, socks, and anything that might rub against your skin.
Be mindful of accidental skin-to-skin contact (like crossing your arms or legs).
6. While Your Tan is Developing
This is your excuse to relax and do nothing!
🚫 No sweating (skip the gym or outdoor heat)
🚫 No water (no swimming, dishes, or showers)
🚫 No skin-to-skin contact (hugging, crossing legs, etc.)
🚫 Limit bathroom use if possible (to prevent streaks).
Kick back, binge a show, or read while your glow develops.
7. The First Rinse & Final Results
Your first rinse sets the tone for your glow:
Use lukewarm water only—no soap or washcloth.
Let the bronzer rinse off with just your hands, then gently pat dry with a clean towel.
Your tan will continue to develop for up to 24 hours. By the next day, you’ll see the full, rich color.
